June 2026 Update
“Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”
Theodore Roosevelt
OUR PRIMARY FOCUS
As we begin our deep work to develop resource management solutions, we organized Water for Whatcom into four committees:
OUR STRUCTURE
Committee of the Whole
We are a group of concerned citizens who seek a collaborative and open-minded approach to water resource issues in our county, which has rich potential to drive constructive change in our community. We seek to gather local community leaders to establish an effective forum for collaboration that will complement the adjudication process – a forum equipped to address difficult water issues in the Nooksack basin, like winter flooding and diminishing summer stream flows.
Influence Committee
The Influence Campaign Committee works to develop a strategy to build the political, institutional, and public support necessary to launch such a forum and move solutions forward. They will identify key leaders and political allies. Through relationship building they will shape the team to get the Committee of the Whole formed and functioning.
Outreach Committee
The Outreach Committee is responsible for external communications. Its goal is to advance community awareness, engagement, and collaboration by creating clear, compelling communications that inspire Whatcom County residents and stakeholders to participate in shaping a sustainable water future.
The Steering Committee
The Steering Committee is responsible for short and long term planning. They set the agenda for the Committee of the Whole. They develop and monitor the budget. They work closely with Triangle Associates, Inc. to ensure we are meeting our immediate objectives and provide guidance as we look to the future.
MAY HAS BEEN A BUSY MONTH FOR US!
Learn how our group is making strides:
- We had a warm welcome from the Bellingham Bay Rotary as Carl Weimer and Rich Appel provided insight into our organization. Is your organization interested in learning more? Let us know. You can watch the Rotary presentation here (25 minutes).
- A member of the Influence Committee met with a Lummi Nation member and the Whatcom Conservation District Executive Director.
- Eight of our members participated in an event at Lummi Nation on May 2nd, sponsored by the film project Water Wars (how to avoid). Members of the Lummi Nation hosted farmers, Nooksack Tribal members, civic leaders, environmentalists, and PNW neighbors who all came to the delta of the Nooksack River — to hear stories, songs, language, history, and to share a meal together on the water.

We are so thankful for the positive responses we have had from our community thus far, and for your support.
