April 2026 Update
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, Collaboration is “the process of two or more people, entities or organizations working together to complete a task or achieve a goal.” From experience, we know successful collaboration is about trust and respect.
Water for Whatcom is working to solve our water resource challenges through collaboration.
Why collaboration?
Our primary focus is the management of water resources within Whatcom County. Water is fundamental to all life, yet the county’s freshwater supply faces increasing risks. The area faces seasonal flooding and drought, impacting agriculture, fisheries crucial to the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Indian Tribe, and residents who rely on consistent water for their homes, employment, and food security.
These concerns are exacerbated by escalating effects of climate change, heightened seasonal weather extremes, statutory and regulatory limitations, and ongoing watershed development.
We believe in the power of collaboration. We have seen it work in initiatives like the Yakima Basin Integrated Plan, and other successful state and national watershed projects. A multilateral approach, emphasizing compromise and shared outcomes, is necessary to ensure a sustainable future for all community members. Our goal is to gather local community leaders to establish an effective forum for negotiations that will complement the adjudication process.
“Collaboration enables us to pool our resources, to learn from each other, and to collectively solve problems.”
― Oscar Auliq-Ice, The Secret of Greatness
What is next for Water for Whatcom?
We are making progress. With the financial help from two grants, we have hired Meg Harris from Triangle Associates. Triangle Associates mission is to help our newly formed organization work with each other to effectively address these pressing issues. Meg will provide neutral, third-party services to ensure inclusive participation, clear access to information, and sound decision-making. We are so fortunate to have her on our team.
As we continue to build the structure of this organization to ensure its success, we extend our gratitude to you for being part of the foundational process. Thank you!
